Collection and Sorting Centre
This was one of the first efforts to promote active community participation in better managing solid waste collection and disposal in partnership with DMMC through the SCP participatory approach. Supported by the NGO Sevanatha, the DMMC was encouraged to work closely with a re-settled low-income community on a canal bank at Badowita, where solid waste management constituted a major environmental problem, where solid waste collection was far from satisfactory, resulting in people throwing waste into the roadside drains as well as into the nearby canal, causing serious health and environmental problems.
Through this neighborhood demonstration project source separation was coordinated by establishing a Waste Collection and Sorting Center in the community, whilst promoting micro enterprises income generation around opportunities to recycle waste products, which ultimately reduced the volume of mixed waste entering into the Municipal waste stream. The community based waste recycling center in Dehiwala Mt Lavitnia was the first ever community initiative in Sri- Lanka on SWM to run a partnership project for earning an income for an urban poor community. The experience demonstrated not only the success and importance of a community participatory process and Public Private Partnerships (PPP) in solving community solid waste management problems, but also the value of keeping the environment free of garbage by making a resource out of the waste.
Today the Badowita re-cycling center has proved to be an excellent demonstration of a community managed pilot project on waste segregation and recycling.
